Meditation

Teaching Meditation

Most of the world’s religions have developed forms of meditation. However, meditation is presented in this class as an optional, secular, learning activity.

For example, Reverend Kusala, a Buddhist monk, demonstrates the method he teaches juveniles in prison to help them relieve their stress so they can get to sleep at night. In a three minute exercise, he rings his bell and tells them to inhale, then slowly exhale while saying to themselves: “As I breathe in, I relax. As I breathe out, I smile."  In other lessons, Zen monks demonstrate their techniques of meditation.  We also examine the famous yogas of India.

There is no worshiping of the Buddha or a deity that goes on inside the classroom. If anything beyond a learning activity, it is a relaxation activity.  Consider recent studies  which indicate that addictions to nicotine, alcohol, and drugs are steadily rising among teenagers.  This is because they are placed under enormous pressure to constantly achieve. Yoga and meditation have become popular in today's culture as healthy, non-chemical alternatives to destructive behaviors.

Remember that all activities in this class are optional. The course itself is an elective.  At all times, deep respect is reserved for every student’s personal faith and convictions.
